Whittington CastleThe castle has history going back to the 12th century but today the major remnant is the outer gatehouse which is approached by the bridge over the moat.
Thonglands
The deliciously sounding name conjures up all sorts of possibly inappropriate images but we should focus on the moat. It surrounds the house which is grade II listed and parts of it date to the time of Elizabeth I.
Ludstone Hall
A Jacobean building from about 1607, probably on the site of a medieval manor house, Ludstone Hall has a rectangular moat (although one side is formed from the monastic fish pool). In the 19th century the moat was modified to form part of the garden scheme which is worth seeing if you are allowed access and don't miss the statuary.
