Kirby Muxloe, Leicestershire
Kirby Muxloe

The brick gatehouse and tower remain from the castle begun in 1480, picturesquely set inside a wet moat. Now in the care of English Heritage, Kirby Muxloe is open weekends and Bank Holidays between April and October.

It is well worth the climb to the top of the massive keep for a superior view of the double moats, gatehouse and Holy Trinity church. It could only be improved if there were more water in the moats but that will vary according to the time of year. If you visit, keep an eye open for the resident peacocks and the planes at Conningsby.

Oxburgh Hall, Norfolk
Oxburgh Hall

A wide moat just as it should be with a bridge across to the imposing and dominant gatehouse; and then there is the house. All in all, delightful.

This photo is something of a cheat because the moat around the building is dry but this wet one is the garden moat. The house was unfinished by Thomas Tresham who was building it based on numbers, very much as he did the Triangular Lodge at Rushton.
